Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae that contains a number of nutrients, including B vitamins, beta-carotene and vitamin E.
Spirulina also contains antioxidants, minerals, chlorophyll and phycocyanobilin and is commonly used as a source of vegan protein. The quality of the protein in spirulina is considered to be excellent – comparable to eggs.
Spirulina was consumed by the ancient Aztecs, but became popular again when NASA suggested that it could be grown in space as food for astronauts. The standard daily dose of spirulina is 1 – 3 grams, but doses of up to 10 grams per day have been used effectively. This tiny alga is full of nutrients.
One tablespoon (7 g) of dried spirulina powder contains:
- Protein: 4 grams
- Vitamin B1: 11% RDA
- Vitamin B2: 15% RDA
- Vitamin: B3: 4% RDA
- Copper: 21% RDA
- Iron: 11% RDA
- About 1 gram of fat including omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in a ratio of about 1.5 : 1.0.
It also contains decent amount of magnesium, potassium, manganese and small amount of almost every other nutrient human body needs. Gram by gram, spirulina is one of the most nutritious foods on the planet.
