 17.76 incl. VAT

Green rapé without tobacco from the Apurinã Indians living on the banks of the Purus River in Brazil.

In stock

The Apurinã Indian tribe live scattered along the banks of the Purus River in Brazil and are known for making a special green rapé without tobacco called Awiri.

Rapé Apurinã Awiry

The Apurinã tribe makes their famous green rapé from a plant they call Awiry. They use no tobacco or ashes, only Awiry, of which they dry the leaves, crush them, and sift them into a powder. This rapé does not contain tobacco. As Awiry grows close to the river, this rapé can only be produced during the dry season when the water level is low. Awiry is traditionally inhaled through a special tube, not blown with kuripe. However, if you don’t want or don’t have a tube for green rapé, you can certainly use standard kuripe and tépi.

This rapé is quite gentle, relaxing, fragrant. It is useful when you want a change from tobacco rapés, or your mucous membranes hurt, or simply when it “calls” you.

Apurinã Indian tribe

The Apurinã Indian tribe lives scattered along the banks of the Purus River in Brazil,  The Apurinã language is from the Aruak root, the closest language would be the Manchineri who inhabit the Upper Purus basin. Their famous green rapé, so typical of their tradition, is made from a local plant that lives in the Awiry. Their history is heavily marked by violence during the extraction of the natural rubber that grows in the area. They are still fighting for the rights to some of their lands, which have not yet been recognized and which are often attacked by loggers.

More info on Rapé use

The conscious use – ritual

Rapé is a sacred amazonian tool. The native tribes are passing it to us with a following message: “The use of rapé should always be connected with a prayer or the ritual. It should be given or received with respect and humility. It helps greatly to come up with a clear intention.  The effects and the realization of the intention tends to get stronger. It is important to keep the purity of the space and heart.”
