The word copal is derived from the Aztec copalcoahuitl, which means a resin-producing tree, or the resin itself. In pre-Columbian times, copal was already considered the most important incense and offering, the Mayans considered it the brain of the heavens, the food of the gods, and could not be missed from any religious, magical or healing ceremony.
Its purifying and protective function is important, during the ceremonial consumption of psychedelic mushrooms or the shamanic drinking of ayahuasca. The place, space, objects and persons who undergo this ritual are always cleansed. Local Indians believe that its smoke can ward off evil spirits, demons and witches, ensuring a successful ceremony.
In Mexico, it is burned to purify and protect the home from all negative influences, disasters and unfortunate events. Patients are often smoked with copal. It’s believed that its smoke can drive away the spirits of illness and greatly help in the healing process.
When burned, white copal emits a bright resinous, velvety balsamic scent with woody notes.
