Rapé Blend Guarani-Kayowa Jatoba from Brazil, sample 0.2 g

The Jatoba rapé blend from the Guarani-Kayowa Brazilian Indians was sent to us by our friend Rafa, it is very rare and unique, there is only a small number of tribes that produce it and share it with the modern world.

Jatoba tree

Jatoba, botanically Hymenaea courbaril, otherwise also courbaril, is a tree common in the Caribbean, Central America and South America. It has hardwood that is used for furniture, flooring and decorations. Its hard fruit pods have an edible dry pulp surrounding the seeds.

Jatoba rapé is made from the ashes of this sacred tree added to a powder from strong tobacco rolls, creating a special mixture. The Jatoba mixture is usually rich in ash and not as concentrated in tobacco powder as it is already strong on its own.

Tradition

Rapé Jatoba is often used in dance ceremonies to give the Indians harmony and focus on the rhythm of a group dance, the Guarani-Kayowa culture is very famous for its ceremonial dances. On such occasions, hundreds and hundreds of natives gather and paint each other’s bodies, believing that this gives them strength and joy to dance. The traditional dance is spiritually understood as “the circle of life’s movement”.
