Sangre de Drago (botanically Croton lechleri, Euphorbiaceae family) is a medium to large tree that grows to a height of 10-20 m in the Amazon (Peru, Ecuador and Colombia). Although the stem is tall, it is usually less than 30 cm in diameter and is covered with a smooth, mottled bark. On large stems it has large, bright green leaves in the shape of a heart and unique, greenish-white flowers. Its Spanish name Sangre de Drago, means “dragon blood”.

When a tree stem is cut or injured, a dark red, pleasant resin flows out, as if the tree is bleeding. The genus Croton is extensive, containing 750 species of trees and shrubs that can be found in tropical and subtropical regions of both hemispheres. They are rich in active alkaloids and several species are well known medicinal plants used as cleansers and tonics.

Sangre de Drago resin and bark is now used in the traditional medicine in South America, and is recommended for bleeding, vaginal mycosis and wound healing. It is also used orally for treating ulcers in the mouth, throat, intestines and stomach; as an antiviral agent for viral infections of the upper respiratory tract, stomach or even HIV; internally and externally for cancer and locally for skin disorders, insect bites and stings. In traditional Brazilian medicine, sap is currently used to accelerate wound healing, bleeding, treatment of diarrhea, mouth ulcers and as a general tonic.

Usage

For internal use: the traditional use is 10-15 drops in a small amount of drink, taken 1-3 times a day (please note that it is not very tasty).
