Kanna (Sceletium tortuosum) is a succulent plant indigenous to South Africa where it is considered to be a part of the traditional medicine.
Kanna belongs to the Aizoaceae family. It grows to a height of 30 centimeters, but tends to expand. The leaves are 4 cm wide, bright green and fleshy. The flowers are white-yellow to light orange. It has many petals, which are in the shape of thin tongues.
Kanna is slowly getting known worldwide at the moment. First mentions were made by Jan Van Riebeck in 1662. African sheep herders and hunters have been chewing it since the prehistoric times as the mood modulator. Kanna can be chewed, consumed directly (be careful not to inhale it), smoked or snuffed. Traditonal healers prepared tinctures as well.
