Tobacco seeds for home growing
Virginia tobacco is an annual plant native to South and Central America. It grows to a height of approximately 2 m. It is a massive plant, the leaves of which are popularly used for smoking.
It contains a large amount of nicotine, which is a substance with a stimulating effect on the central nervous system. It also stimulates the digestive system and has antidiuretic effects.
How to grow tobacco?
Tobacco seeds are sown from February to March in a heated substrate or at home in pots. They are sown shallowly or directly on the surface at a distance of a few cm from each other. It is appropriate to moisten the seed and cover it with foil, or you can use a mini-heater. Gradually, the seeds will begin to germinate.
Grown plants with leaf sizes of 10-20 cm are planted after the last frosts in an outdoor location or in a greenhouse, at a distance of 50 cm from each other. They are suited to full sun and a lighter, warming soil, with a neutral pH, which should be spaded to a depth of at least 20 cm.
During the growing season, the plants are regularly watered and loosened.
Harvest time comes when the leaves begin to turn yellow from below. The leaves are dried in a dark, well-ventilated room for 2-3 months. In order to obtain better quality tobacco, it is advisable to carry out fermentation, which consists in moistening the dried leaves again and keeping them in containers without access to air at a temperature of about 40 °C for a month. Dry the fermented leaves in a warm room for about 4 days.
