Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae that contains a number of nutrients, including B vitamins, beta-carotene and vitamin E.

Spirulina also contains antioxidants, minerals, chlorophyll and phycocyanobilin and is commonly used as a source of vegan protein. The quality of the protein in spirulina is considered to be excellent – comparable to eggs.

Spirulina was consumed by the ancient Aztecs, but became popular again when NASA suggested that it could be grown in space as food for astronauts. About 1 gram of fat including omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in a ratio of about 1.5 : 1.0.
